As we edit the writing of authors, we work backwards from:

• Their intended readers, why they read such writing, and how they use it, to
• The distribution system that gets such writing into these readers’ hands, to
• The publishers who publish material to be distributed in this way, to
• The form and format the writing should therefore take in order to fit these publishers’ needs and practices

From the outside in

We spend a great deal of time and energy with writers making sure their concept is clear, at all times supporting that concept and the structure of the writing. That is, we concentrate on any renovations needed before concerning ourselves with stylistic issues. (What good would it be to decorate a room when a wall needs to be removed first? Similarly, what good would it be to edit for grammar, syntax, and style when the words so edited are going to be cut or moved?)

From the inside out

Once we and our writers know that the structure of the writing is sound, we then make sure that the writing is clear and is at all times supportive of concept and structure.
