Meet Donald G. Bastian of Bastian Publishing Services Ltd.

  • A veteran book editor with over fifteen years’ experience running the editorial programs of Irwin Publishing (trade division) and Stoddart Publishing, the latter at the time Canada’s largest Canadian-owned trade publishing house
  • Edited the manuscripts of major Canadian authors, including Charles Taylor, John Ralston Saul (book won the Governor-General’s Award for Nonfiction), Marq de Villiers (book won the Governor-General’s Award for Nonfiction), Carole Corbeil (book won the Toronto Book Award), Rod McQueen (winner of National Business Award), Miriam Toews (book won the Robinson McNally Book of the Year award), William D. Gairdner, Hugh Segal, David Suzuki, Adam Zimmerman, Walter Stewart, Trevor Herriot (book won many national and Saskatchewan awards), Henry Mintzberg, Peter Bender, Cy Charney, Barbara Moses

CAREER HISTORY

August 2002 – current – Successfully launched Bastian Publishing Services Ltd. and its divisions Bastian Books and BPS Books. Clients have included Dorling Kindersley Publishing, UK, HarperCollins Canada, Key Porter Books, Thomson Nelson Publishing, McGill-Queen’s University Press, House of Anansi Press, the Dundurn Group, Fitzhenry & Whiteside, Castle Quay Books, CIBC Securities; Horn & Associates, Ryerson University, Second Opinions Financial Services, GoodLife Fitness Clubs. Acting as literary agent on a limited basis, he has successfully placed over ten books with publishers, including at AMACOM Books in New York, and ECW Press, Dundurn Press, HarperCollins Canada, and McGill-Queen’s University Press.

1988-2002 – Managing Editor, Stoddart Publishing, Toronto, overseeing the editing of 60–75 books per year

1990 – present – Lecturer in the Publishing Certificate Program of Ryerson University, including through distance learning

1986-1988 – Managing Editor, Irwin Publishing (trade division)

1978-1986 – Ran Manthano Enterprises, a freelance editing business; clients included University of Toronto Press, Oxford University Press, University of Toronto Information Services, Victoria College, Addiction Research Foundation of Ontario, Canadian Cancer Society, Free Methodist Church in Canada (edited The Free Methodist Herald for 14 years)
